An important quality of a global citizen is courage. The courage to respect others’ perspectives. As an immigrant, most of the time I feel like Americans have to respect and know my culture, language, and points of view, and I just forget that they are humans too and that I have to respect them and accept that we are different. I have been reminding myself to choose curiosity over judgment. Another important quality of a global citizen is the heart, which is considered the house of empathy. Whose door opens when we receive the pain of others? How hard it is to be open to others and to show our vulnerability, but if we want empathy, we have to be brave and show our hearts to the world—and at the moment we do, they will empathize with us.
